10 tips to improve your CV

In the heart of Helsinki, we were proud to attend the Spring Games Job Fair 2024 which brought together talent from various backgrounds, eager to refine their resumes and portfolios under the guidance of industry experts.

Among the attendees were Ben Flatt, our own Talent Acquisition Manager and Juho Salila – Art Manager. They offered feedback and tips to shed light on the art of presenting yourself effectively in a competitive job market. We asked them what advice they would recommend for someone looking to tweak their resume or reshape their portfolio in order to stand out among the crowd.

Ben Flatt shared his expertise in creating the perfect resume that can capture the attention of hiring managers and recruiters:

  1. Prioritize Recent Experience: List your most recent roles first, in reverse chronological order, to highlight your current expertise and relevance.
  2. Strategic Presentation: Place your name, title, and contact information prominently at the top of your resume to ensure visibility. Avoid burying essential details like your portfolio or skills at the bottom.
  3. Simplicity in Design: Opt for a clean and organized layout without overcrowding the page with unnecessary columns or dividers. Clarity enhances readability!
  4. Relevance of Information: Streamline your resume by removing redundant details, such as non-relevant skills, unless directly relevant to the role.
  5. Conciseness: Keep your resume concise and limit it to two pages. Irrelevant work experiences can be removed to focus on relevant skills and achievements.
  6. Consideration of Visual Elements: While a photo can personalize your resume, weigh the potential for unconscious bias against space, prioritize content over aesthetics.
  7. Highlight Key Points: Emphasize your strongest skills and achievements at the top to capture the attention of recruiters amidst many applications.
  8. Clarity and Readability: Structure your resume with bullet points and a professional font to ensure easy comprehension. Avoid overwhelming hiring managers with lengthy paragraphs and utilize whitespace and consistent formatting to enhance readability and visual appeal.
  9. Balanced Creativity: While creativity is valued, maintain a balance between visual appeal and clarity. Save elaborate designs for your portfolio, focusing on content clarity in your resume.
  10. Personal Branding: Consider creating a personal brand across your resume and online presence. A portfolio website can supplement your resume, showcasing your projects, game jams and accomplishments in greater detail.

Both Ben and Juho emphasized the importance of strategic presentation and content clarity in standing out amidst fierce competition. By following these tips, we hope that attendees left the event equipped with the tools and knowledge to navigate the job market with confidence. Thanks for letting us be part of this great event and it was great to give back to the community in times of need.
